Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors, Sep 24-27 2015

Posted by on

Telluride is world-renowned for its splendor and its beauty. And in 2015, the inaugural Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors will continue the time-honored tradition of the Concours d’Elegance, and gather the world’s finest automobiles at one of America’s most beautiful destinations.

Scenic Telluride and the rugged San Jan Mountains will be the backdrop for the event, as it introduces million-dollar automobiles into its spectacular palette of autumnal colors.

Set for September 24-27, 2015, the festival will occupy three distinct venues over the course of four days: downtown Telluride Historic District including the park and pavilion, the luxurious hamlet of Mountain Village, and America’s highest commercial airstrip, the 9,070-foot Telluride Regional Airport.

Settle into one of Mountain Village’s luxurious hotels, and then spend a long weekend experiencing the inaugural Mountain Village Golf Course Concours d’Elegance. You’ll see exquisite vintage machines, top-flight restorations, international exotics, and the very cream of the American classic and sports car crop, displayed in the shadow of Telluride Ski Resort’s towering peaks.

Attending the Million Dollar Highway Road Rally will reward you with the most visually stunning driving experience in these United States. As picturesque Telluride disappears in the rearview mirror, a brilliant canopy of garnet and gold beckons you. With the soothing cacophony of internal combustion humming in your ears, the aspen’s blinding yellow flames lead the way as you traverse hundreds of exhilarating turns, and thousands of feet in altitude.

And as you glide through tiny, timeworn towns like Ridgway, Silverton, Durango, and Rico, you’ll arrive at a stunning realization: a more rewarding, more spectacular American drive, there is none.

Additional auto events include the Cars of the Stars and JFK Cars exhibits and the Cool Cars on Colorado car shows, located on Telluride’s Colorado Avenue, all running from Friday through Sunday. Meet fellow enthusiasts, visit the rustic shops and restaurants, and enjoy multiple venues of live music. And on Saturday, marvel at the speed and beauty of luxury airplanes at the Jets & Jags Regional Airport fly-in.

And if your perfect weekend includes parking your vehicle and exploring the festival on foot, Telluride’s free public transit and will deliver you in style to each of the festivals three main venues!

Throw in the Morning Revv, the cocktail hours and VIP dinners, and you have to work hard to take it all in! And that’s not even including Telluride itself: our town is packed with amazing outdoor activities: the 4×4 tours, mountain biking trails, hanging waterfall hikes, fly fishing, the 18-hole golf course, rock climbing, glider rides and so much more you may need to extend your stay!

The Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors is a family-friendly festival, and we’ve created numerous specially curated activities to ensure that your family has just as much fun as we automobile aficionados do.

There are a variety of social events, including outdoor tours, relaxing spa sessions, shopping trips, and wine and cheese socials. As greater Telluride features some of the most opulent homes in Colorado, they’ll be on display during Saturday’s Parade of Homes event. And to make it really interesting, there’s a $5,000 medallion hunt—so be sure to attend Morning Revv to get the daily clues!

Upcoming Performances at Sheridan Opera House

Posted by on

We have three awesome shows to add to our summer 2015 lineup! Mark your calendars for the following concerts and on-sale dates.

On Friday, July 3, we celebrate Independence Day with Joe, a Tribute to Joe Cocker! Tickets are $25 general admission floor and $35 reserved seats on the balcony. They will increase by $5 day of the show.

Joe, A Tribute to Joe Cocker is a labor of love that springs from a deep and abiding admiration for the music of Joe Cocker from a legion of musicians from Detroit, Michigan. Joe Cocker was one of rock and roll’s enduring performers with his gutsy, gravelly vocal stype and unique stage presence that made him not only one of the most dynamic singers in the music indstry, but one of the most distinctive voices in the history of rock and roll.

The band is committed to accurately representing this well respected interpreter of classic soul records, big power ballads and high energy tracks. They strive to bring the frenetic spirit of Joe Cocker’s live performances, like Woodstock, to audiences far and wide, and we are very excited to have them bring that energy to the intimate Sheridan Opera House.

Tickets for this show go on sale Friday, May 29 at 12 p.m.noon (Colorado time).

On Saturday, Aug. 8, we collaborate once again with the incomparable Jewel for a night of music and storytelling at the Sheridan Opera House. The show will be a fundraiser for the Sheridan Arts Foundation, the non-profit that owns and operates the historic Sheridan Opera House, and Jewel’s non-profit Project Clean Water.

Jewel is an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and daughter to an Alaskan cowboy singer-songwriter. From the remote ranch of her Alaskan youth to the triumph of international stardom, the three-time Grammy nominee, hailed by the New York Times as a “songwriter bursting with talents” has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. Whether alone with her guitar or fronting a band of ace musicians, Jewel has always been a charismatic live performer, earning the respect of other singer-songwriters such as Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who, not only invited her to open their shows, but mentored her in the early phases of her career. Her singular style and beauty continuously land her on the covers of such diverse magazines as Time,People, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, In Style, Glamour andSeventeen. Stuff listed her among its ‘102 Sexiest Women in the World’ while Blender went further, crowning her ‘rock’s sexiest poet.

Tickets for this show are $75, $125 & $200 depending on location in the theater. The show will be reserved seating.

Tickets go on sale on FRIDAY, JUNE 5 at 12 p.m. (Colorado time).

There will be a Meet and Greet with Jewel open only to ticket purchasers for an additional $30 with all proceeds from the show and Meet & Greet benefitting Project Clean Water and the historic Sheridan Opera House. Information about the Meet & Greet will be available once tickets go on sale.

And a few days later in August, we present internationally known pianist Scott Cossu & Friends live at the Sheridan Opera House on Tuesday, Aug. 11 for a night of jazz, blues and barrel house boogie. Cossu was up front when New Age was just beginning more than 30 years ago, and he’s now considered the grandfather of the New Age scene. Billboard Magazine labeled him a “jazz luminary of the future.” Cossu will be joined by Slyderz Van Manakas on Guitar and Scott Emerson Doser on Percussion with a variety of special guests. Tickets are $20 and $30 reserved seats with cabaret tables up front. Tickets will be $5 more the day of the show, buy in advance!Tickets go on sale May 29, 12 p.m. noon (Colorado time).

We kick off our summer concerts next Friday June 5 with a FREE show featuring Durango-based indie soul outfit Hello, Dollface at the Sheridan Opera House. The show is free, but donations will be accepted at the door for our Wild West Fest scholarship fund.

And please don’t forget Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been on sale for a while now, and tickets are still available for the June 9 show at the Sheridan Opera House. Our new ticketing policy is to $5 more the day of the show, so buy in advance if you’re considering coming to this show to save money.

Don’t let those cool mountain evenings fool you. Telluride’s summer days can pack a brutal heat index punch! But how can you find respite during your next Telluride vacation? Telluride Luxury is here to help you find the best ways to stay cool so you keep your cool!

1. Sitting Poolside

There is so much to do in Telluride from hiking to biking, climbing and fishing, but sometimes it’s just nice to take a load off. Spend your time cooling-off at one of many swimming pools that can be found in Telluride and Mountain Village. Head on over to Telluride Town Park community pool or enjoy the Peaks Resort & Spa’s indoor/outdoor pool.

2. Refresh with Waterfalls

Due to snow melt, the rivers and streams in the Telluride are offer cold, refreshing water for anyone needing a quick cool-down. Hands-down, the best way to cool down and take in the beauty of the canyon is by enjoying the various waterfalls in the area. Cornet Creek Falls is just a short hike from town, accessible from the Jud Weibe Trailhead. Or head-up the one-mile trail to Bear Creek Falls, a popular hike from town.

3. Paddle Boarding Haven

Paddle Boarding (or SUP boarding) is the newest activity to hit the Box Canyon. Head out with a guide or rent a few and go on your own adventure to Alta Lake, Trout Lake or just head down the San Miguel River in town! Here is a great list of outfitters and rental companies.

5 Reasons To Plan Your Guy Getaway in Telluride

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Posted by on

Men’s Health named Telluride as one of the “Coolest Winter Guy Getaways” earlier this year. With outstanding ski terrain, restaurants and nightlife as well as breathtaking vistas, it’s no wonder we made the list! If this isn’t enough to convince you, here are our top 5 reasons to plan your guy getaway in Telluride this winter:

1.127 trails, no lift lines

You all work hard. And maybe the only way you survive sitting at a desk all day is dreaming of drifting through powdery snow you know awaits you during your next ski trip. Telluride prides itself on having virtually no lift line waits, giving you more time to ski the resort’s 127 trails. And with trail difficulty ranging from 23% beginner, 26% intermediate and 41% advanced/expert, every person in your group will find terrain to shred!

2. Off-mountain fun for everyone

Wanting to do something other than ski during the day? Several Telluride guides offer great group activities to keep you and your buddies outdoors and active. Join Telluride Outfitters on a full or half-day snowmobile tour through the San Juan Mountains to the famous ghost town of Alta and enjoy views of Wilson Peak.

See a full list of things to do during the winter on the Visit Telluride website here.

3. Ski-in and ski-out anywhere you stay

Between Telluride and the gondola-adjoined town of Mountain Village, ski-in and ski-out accommodations are in abundance. But even those locations that aren’t directly on the slopes are just a short walk away from the nearest lift. In the town Telluride, the free bus system, The Galloping Goose, can take you to lift 7, 8 or to the gondola, all of which gain on-mountain access and no matter where you catch the bus, you can be assured to be at the lift within five to 10 minutes. In the town of Mountain Village, ski-in ski-out access can be found at most of the luxury hotels including the amazing luxury boutique hotel Lumiere.

See a full list of Lumiere residences from Telluride Luxury or see all of our properties here.

4. Brew hop on fat bikes

Looking to try one of the Colorado microbrews you’ve heard so much about? Telluride is lucky enough to have two microbreweries call it home. Smuggler’s Brewpub, located in downtown Telluride, and the award-winning Telluride Brewery, located jus a few miles outside of town. Although you can find Telluride Brewery beers on tap in most restaurants and bars in town, Bootdoctors/Paragon offers fat tire bike ride tours to the Brewery where you can see the beer being made and taste each brew.

5. Nightlife fun

The fun doesn’t end when you leave the mountain. Telluride’s nightlife is sure to please. Whether you are looking for live music (Sheridan Opera House, Fly Me to the Moon Saloon, The Steaming Bean and the Last Dollar Saloon offer music weekly) or just a place to hand your hat and enjoy some brews, the offerings are endless.

Packing Tips for Your Telluride Summer Trip

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Posted by on

You’ve booked your trip to Telluride. Now all you have to do is pack a bag (or bags if you are anything like the ladies in this office). For those visiting the area for the first time, it can be a little daunting to know what best to pack. From the unpredictable Colorado weather, to gear for activities, what should you take and what should you leave behind? Telluride Luxury is here to help you navigate your closets to make your trip the best it can be! Here are our Telluride trip packing tips:

It seems like a no brainer but in the chaos of last minute packing hopping online to see the forecast can be overlooked. The day before you leave for your vacation, make sure to check the weekly weather forecast so you can pack accordingly. Our favorite weather website is NOAA (the government’s weather organization). Pack for the forecast, even if there seems to only be a small percentage of bad weather. Another great idea? Download a weather ap on your smart phone, if available, so you can see what each day will look like before you take off on any outdoor activities. We like NOAA’s ap for this purpose.

Telluride temperatures can vary from hour to hour. Hot summer days can have temperatures up to 90 degrees, only to drop into the 30s in the evenings. Be prepared by packing multiple layers and bringing a good day pack to carry around additional clothing, sun screen, water, etc. Some great options are thin, long sleeved tops like this Mountain Hardware “Women’s Dry Hiker Hoodie”  or this “Men’s Wicked Lite Long Sleeve Shirt.” Shirts that have a built-in layer of sun protectant are also a great option. Another MUST HAVE layer, a rain jacket. It’s easy and compact and you won’t be sorry when a rain storm comes in and catches you off-guard. We love Mountain Hardware’s “Ghost Whisperer Hooded Jacket.” It’s lightweight and packs down into a small pouch. Great for throwing into a purse or backpack.

With so many different types of activities to take part in, what you wear on your feet can make a big difference. If you plan on doing a lot of hiking, make sure to bring a good pair of hiking boots or, if you want to bring something a little less bulky, pack a pair of trail running shoes or solid active shoes. Just make sure the sole of the shoe has good traction. Thinking you might spend more time in the water? With rocky-bottomed rivers, your best bet is a good pair of strap-on sandals like Chacos or to double-up on shoes, try Keen’s Owyhee Sandal that can also be used for light hiking.

Be Sunscreen Smart! We all want to return home from a vacation with a fabulous tan, but be warned, Telluride’s high-altitude sunshine is no match for the toughest of skins. At high altitudes the ultraviolet rays from the sun are more intense and damaging and sunburns take much longer to heal. Your skin normally starts to get pink after your skin has been burned so don’t wait to apply! Put it on before you leave your room and make sure to always keep a tube with you.

Water Bottle Located in a high-altitude, dry climate, water is an absolute must in Telluride! If you have room in your suitcase, throw an empty one in for use or purchase a bottle at one of the many outdoor stores on Telluride’s main street (Colorado Avenue) after you arrive. The atmosphere at higher elevations contains less oxygen and pressure, causing water to evaporate from your lungs and skin more quickly than lower altitudes. Drink three liters of water a day and an extra 1.5 cups of water if you have done any physical activity. We really like the Platypus plusBottle water bottle because if folds down into a little bag for easy packing.

Hats! You have your sunscreen, which will protect your from the sun. But don’t forget a hat! A nice sun hat or baseball cap will protect you from the sun’s strong rays but will also protect your hair from bugs as you navigate the surrounding trails. Don’t want to pack one? Pick one up at Telluride Sports for a stylish sun hat or grab a great Telluride Brewery baseball cap while you do a beer tasting in Lawson!

More Than a Purse In most areas, carrying around the items you need day-to-day can easily be carried around in a handbag. From the layers (see above! You need them!) of clothing you will need throughout the day, to sunscreens and water bottles, a good day backpack is the way to go. Don’t worry about what it looks like. Whether you pack the top-of-the-line Patagonia bag or your favorite trendy pack, make sure to have one if you plan on doing any activities around the Box Canyon. We love this “Walking the Day” backpack from Modcloth or for a sportier look, try Osprey’s Talon series.
